Bill Carey is a journalist, historian and the author of several Nashville history books. A former reporter for The Tennessean, WPLN public radio, the Nashville Scene, and NashvillePost.com, he has quite a few stories about city hall, the state legislature and the business community. Along the way, history became his specialty; he was a history columnist for The Tennessean from 2003 to 2006 and currently writes a monthly history column for Tennessee magazine.

His first book was Fortunes, Fiddles and Fried Chicken: A Nashville Business History -- a title considered required reading for people trying to do business in Nashville. Among his other titles are Chancellors Commodores and Coeds: A History of Vanderbilt University; Master of the Big Board: The Life, Times and Businesses of Jack C. Massey; and Leave No One Behind: Hurricane Katrina and the Rescue of Tulane Hospital.

A crusader for local history in particular and social studies in general, in 2004 he founded Tennessee History for Kids, an organization that helps teachers teach, students learn and parent help with Tennessee history, civics and geography.
